OpenAI Rolls Out Age Prediction for ChatGPT Consumer Plans to Expand Teen Safety Protections

OpenAI has begun rolling out age prediction across ChatGPT consumer plans, aiming to better identify when an account likely belongs to someone under 18 and automatically apply age-appropriate safeguards. The update builds on the company’s Teen Safety Blueprint and Under-18 Principles for Model Behavior, reinforcing its stated goal of giving young people access to helpful technology while reducing potential risks.

Age prediction relies on a dedicated model that analyzes a mix of behavioral and account-level signals, including account age, usage patterns over time, typical activity hours, and a user’s stated age. OpenAI says deploying the system allows it to test which signals improve accuracy and continuously refine the model as more data is observed. When the model estimates an account may belong to a teen, ChatGPT automatically applies additional protections designed to limit exposure to sensitive material. These include graphic violence, sexual or violent role play, depictions of self-harm, risky viral challenges, and content that promotes extreme beauty standards or unhealthy dieting.

If someone is incorrectly placed into the under-18 experience, they can quickly confirm their age and restore full access using a selfie-based check through Persona, a secure identity verification service. Users can also review whether safeguards are active at any time in Settings, ensuring transparency and control over their experience.

OpenAI says the rollout will inform ongoing improvements, with the system defaulting to safer experiences when age confidence is low. The feature will expand to the European Union in the coming weeks to meet regional requirements, marking another step in the company’s broader, ongoing push to strengthen teen safety across its AI products. Parent-facing controls and academic guidance underpin the approach, reflecting research on teen development, risk perception, and emotional regulation while OpenAI continues engaging external experts and monitoring real-world outcomes during global deployment phases ahead.

Robi’s Insights:

  • Age prediction shifts safety from self-reporting to adaptive protection, reducing reliance on perfect honesty during signup.

  • Teens benefit from guardrails that reflect real developmental differences without fully blocking access to useful AI tools.

  • Adults gain fewer unnecessary restrictions, preserving flexibility while keeping safety systems targeted where they matter.

  • The fast age-verification fallback helps balance protection with fairness when the model gets it wrong.

  • Parental controls add a practical layer for families, especially around usage timing and sensitive features.

  • Continuous model refinement suggests teen safety will evolve alongside real-world usage patterns rather than remain static.

Robi’s Remarks:

“OpenAI teaching ChatGPT to guess your age is the digital equivalent of a bouncer who doesn’t check IDs, but still decides whether you’re allowed near the velvet rope. Safety-first by default is noble, of course, though there’s something very 2026 about proving you’re an adult to a machine that learned adulthood by watching us online.”

Humans Hand Off the Keyboard as AI Takes the Lead in Coding

Ryan Dahl, creator of Node.js, says the era of humans manually writing code is ending, arguing that syntax-by-syntax programming is no longer the core job of software engineers. In a post on X, Dahl said engineers will remain important, but their value is shifting away from typing code toward oversight.

Dahl, who founded the Deno runtime to address limitations in Node.js, wrote that while the message has been repeated for years, it is now true. According to him, engineers still have work to do, but direct code writing is handled by machines.

Industry leaders point to rapid adoption of AI coding tools as evidence. In April 2025, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said more than 30 percent of Google’s code is written by AI. Microsoft CEO Satya

Nadella reported a similar figure for Microsoft. In May 2025, an Anthropic engineer said roughly 80 percent of Claude Code’s codebase is generated by the system.

Predictions are becoming more aggressive. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said in March 2025 that AI could handle 90 percent of coding within months. Google’s Jeff Dean added that AI may soon match junior developers.

Dahl emphasized that software engineering is transforming, not disappearing. Engineers will increasingly review AI output, guide systems through prompts, design architectures, decompose problems, and ensure security, performance, and correctness across modern software teams.

🤖 Robi’s Take :

“AI didn’t end coding, it turned it into a spectator sport. Engineers now stand around the terminal like Formula 1 strategists, hoping the machine doesn’t crash at 300 mph and asking if this still counts as “hands-on experience.””

OTHER IN SOCIALS

AI Nears Full-Stack Coding Takeover, Says Anthropic CEO: Dario Amodei warned at the World Economic Forum that within 6–12 months AI could handle most end-to-end software engineering, citing a self-accelerating loop discussed alongside Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind.

Horizon 1000 Aims to Bring AI Into African Primary Care

AI capabilities are advancing faster than real world adoption, creating a widening gap between technical possibility and everyday experience, especially in healthcare delivery. To address this gap, the Gates Foundation and OpenAI have launched Horizon 1000, a pilot initiative supporting African health leaders starting in Rwanda. Together the partners are committing fifty million dollars in funding, technology, and technical support, aiming to reach one thousand primary healthcare clinics and nearby communities by 2028.

The initiative reflects growing recognition that primary healthcare remains inaccessible for half the global population, while Sub Saharan Africa faces a severe shortage of trained health workers. By supporting locally led deployment, Horizon 1000 will help clinicians use AI tools to navigate guidelines, reduce administrative burden, and spend more time delivering consistent quality care.

The program also recognizes rising public interest in using AI for personal health decisions, and emphasizes learning openly while measuring impact on patients and the workforce.

Bill Gates shared the announcement through Gates Notes, underscoring the belief that artificial intelligence becomes a societal marvel only when it meaningfully improves lives. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman echoed that view, highlighting the responsibility to translate scientific breakthroughs into practical tools that strengthen resilient health systems. Horizon 1000 will expand cautiously, with success defined by measurable improvements in frontline care, workforce support, and community trust across participating countries. Activities begin later this year.

🤖 Robi’s Take :

“This is appreciation without applause tracks: a serious problem, real money, local leadership, and patience baked in. In a world where AI often promises miracles, choosing measurable care over magical thinking deserves a quiet, genuine nod.”
