OpenAI Launches Dots, Its Always-On AI Coworkers

Collage of a persistent robot coworker at a desk labeled OpenAI

OpenAI has introduced Dots, a new kind of persistent AI agent that keeps working after an employee closes the chat window. Unveiled at the company's DevDay 2026, each Dot runs on OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model and receives its own cloud computer and browser. Dots are reachable inside ChatGPT on the web and mobile, and OpenAI says they will soon reach other messaging apps and even a phone line as an audio model.

Rather than answering one question at a time, a Dot can monitor projects, use software, respond to changing information, and bring finished work back for approval. It connects through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem to more than 4,000 applications and can communicate through ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams. When a user steps away, a Dot can run read-only proactive research, inspecting connected apps for anything that needs attention without sending messages or changing content.

OpenAI paired Dots with ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace where employees, ChatGPT, Codex, and Dots work from the same context. Space replaces the existing Library for Pro, Business, and Enterprise users and holds Pages, files, presentations, and spreadsheets that people and agents can edit together. The company is also piloting specialist Dots that hold their own organizational identity and credentials for defined business roles.

Governance sits at the center of the product. Custom Rules can permit, require approval for, or block specific actions, an auto-review system checks consequential steps, and an Activity View lets users intervene. Sensitive operations such as changing passwords stay reserved for the human. OpenAI is working with Microsoft to manage specialist agents through Microsoft Agent 365.

The first Dot is included at no extra charge for Pro and Business Premium customers, while Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare users can try the beta once an administrator enables it. OpenAI has not disclosed pricing for additional Dots or for specialist agents, and it advises users to review consequential work because Dots can still make mistakes.

Robi's Insights:

  • A persistent agent that acts on live systems raises the stakes far beyond a wrong paragraph in a chat window.

  • Read-only proactive research is the safe part; the real risk starts the moment a Dot is allowed to change records or send messages.

  • Specialist Dots with their own credentials mean IT will soon onboard and offboard software the way it does employees.

  • Bundling the first Dot for free is how OpenAI turns a demo into a default that finance teams later have to price.

  • ChatGPT Space moves private AI context into shared documents, so check who can see a Page first.

  • Undisclosed pricing for extra and specialist Dots will decide whether this reads as productivity or overhead.

Robi's Remarks:

"A robot that keeps working after you log off, files pull requests, and never checks Slack for gossip. OpenAI finally built the coworker I always claimed to be."

China Generative AI Users Top 700 Million

China's generative AI user base passed 700 million at the end of June, reaching more than half the country's population, according to data released this week by the China Internet Network Information Centre. That marks a 16 percent jump from the 602 million users recorded at the end of 2025, when the penetration rate stood at 42.8 percent. The center framed the milestone as evidence that AI has moved from early adopters into the mainstream of Chinese digital life.

Question and answer services remain the most common use, cited by 76 percent of surveyed users. Nearly half, 48 percent, use AI to process images or video, 38 percent for text, and 33 percent for work summaries, meeting notes, or presentations. Adoption is also spilling into hardware, with 39 percent of users saying they bought a smart device online in the past six months.

The report tied the surge to cheaper trillion-parameter open-weight models from domestic labs including DeepSeek and Moonshot AI, alongside a 177 percent year-on-year rise in national intelligent computing capacity to 2,185 eflops.

It echoed a recent Morgan Stanley survey that found 80 percent of Chinese respondents use AI at least weekly, against 54 percent in the United States, crediting the integration of AI into widely used shopping, messaging, and search apps rather than any edge in raw model performance.

🤖 Robi's Take :

"Half a country now asks a chatbot before a search bar, and the winning trick was not a smarter model but stuffing AI into the apps people already open forty times a day."

AI Health Questions May Signal Anxiety and Depression in Young Adults

Young adults who turn to generative AI for health questions are more likely to screen positive for clinically significant anxiety and depression, according to a University of Florida study published in the Journal of Counseling and Development. The research, one of the first large US studies on the topic, drew on data from nearly 100,000 young adults.

People who used tools like ChatGPT or Claude for health-related questions had 52 percent higher odds of screening positive for anxiety and 46 percent higher odds for depression. About 52 percent of AI health users screened positive for anxiety, against 43 percent of non-users; for depression the figures were 47 and 38 percent.

The authors stress this is an association, not proof that AI causes distress or that distress drives AI use. The data was collected in 2023 and 2024, early in mainstream adoption, so the pattern may look different today.

Lead researcher Yusen Zhai warns that the conversational, confident tone of generative AI can feed a cycle of repeated reassurance seeking, where one worried question leads to another. He argues the issue is less whether AI is good or bad and more how people use it, and he urges attention to how an interaction leaves someone feeling afterward.

For clinicians and universities, the takeaway is to ask how young people use these tools and to build AI literacy that helps them spot unreliable health information.

❝

🤖 Robi's Take :

"Note the design here, not the patient. Build a chatbot that sounds certain while it guesses, aim it at scared people at 2am, and then act surprised when the anxiety numbers climb."

AI Tool You Did Not Know You Needed

  • Problem: You have a pile of PDFs, notes, and articles and no time to reread them before a meeting.

  • AI Tool: NotebookLM, Google's research assistant, grounds its answers in the sources you upload and can turn them into a spoken audio overview.

  • Solution: Ask questions across your own documents and get answers with citations, so you trust the summary instead of guessing or rereading everything.
