OpenAI Upgrades GPT-5.6 Sol, Expands Free Access
OpenAI has updated GPT-5.6 Sol, the model that powers ChatGPT, and widened free access to its lighter GPT-5.6 Luna model. For Plus and Pro subscribers, Sol now aims to be more reliable with facts and to give more focused answers, and a new slider lets users choose how much thought ChatGPT puts into each reply. Free users get a bigger change: GPT-5.6 Luna becomes their default model with unlimited text chats.
The update also pulls ChatGPT's quick Instant answers and its slower Thinking mode closer together. For Plus and Pro users, one model now powers both modes. Free and Go users gain a new Think button that gives Luna extra time to work through harder questions.
OpenAI says the tuned Sol gives more direct responses, adapts its level of detail to the question, uses tighter formatting, and offers a correction when simply agreeing would not help. In an internal evaluation of financial, medical, and legal prompts, replies containing at least one factual error were about 62 percent less common with Luna and 68 percent less common with Sol than with the older GPT-5.5 Instant.
The company frames the release as a step toward more abundant intelligence, noting that roughly 1 billion people use ChatGPT each week. Wider access and steadier answers matter for the businesses and everyday users who lean on the assistant for planning, research, and decisions.
Plus and Pro users can use the updated Sol and the slider today. Luna becomes the default for Free and Go users this week, with unlimited text chats and the Think button arriving next week, subject to abuse guardrails. Limits still apply to file uploads, images, and other tools, and this everyday Sol stays in the Chat experience, separate from Work and Codex.

Kellanova Turns to AI to Perfect Every Pringle
Kellanova, the company behind Pringles, has spent several years and about 5 million dollars teaching artificial intelligence to make the perfect stackable chip. The goal sounds trivial, yet the uniform saddle shape that lets Pringles nest inside a can is surprisingly hard to reproduce at industrial scale, where broken dough and chips sticking in the fryer routinely disrupt the line.
To crack it, the company built a digital twin of its Pringles dough, a virtual copy that simulates the manufacturing process and pinpoints where problems begin. It then wired the production line with sensors that track real time details such as the particle size of the flour, roughly 200 data points in all, feeding an AI model that flags variances before they become bottlenecks.
The payoff, Kellanova says, is consistency: the same crunch and the same taste every time a can is opened. Siemens offers the same digital twin approach for making rockets, batteries, and microchips, which makes a snack food an unlikely showcase for the technology. Whether shoppers ever notice a more perfectly uniform chip is a separate question.
The project reflects a wider trend of using AI not to replace workers but to fine tune old industrial processes, spotting the tiny inconsistencies that human eyes miss across thousands of units an hour, long before a bad batch reaches the shelf.

AI Designs 16 New Viruses to Fight Drug Resistance
Scientists have used artificial intelligence to design entirely new viruses from scratch, a milestone that points toward new medicines while raising fresh biosecurity concerns. In a study published in the journal Science, researchers from Stanford University and the Arc Institute used an AI tool called Evo to generate genomes unlike any found in nature.
Evo learned from genetic sequences drawn from millions of organisms, much as a chatbot learns from text. The team generated thousands of genome designs constrained to work inside E. coli bacteria, built and tested about 300 in the lab, and found that 16 were viable viruses.
These viruses are bacteriophages, which infect bacteria and cannot harm humans. A cocktail of them cleared some E. coli strains that a comparable mix of natural phages could not, pointing to a path for phage therapies against drug resistant infections.
The upside is real, since drug resistant bacteria like E. coli are a growing threat and one designed virus even carried a trait researchers called evolutionarily distant, a leap nature might take millions of years to reach.
The risks are just as clear. Experts at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security warned that the ability to compose viral genomes with AI now exists while the governance to steer it safely does not, urging researchers to avoid designing pathogens that infect humans.
