OpenAI has introduced the OpenAI Deployment Company, a new business unit focused on helping enterprises integrate advanced AI into daily operations. The initiative launches with more than $4 billion in backing and positions OpenAI to compete more aggressively in enterprise consulting and deployment services. RegVelo, a new AI framework, predicts how developing cells acquire identities, which routes they take, and which genes drive those choices. The work, published May 11 in Cell, could help researchers study developmental disorders, tumor growth, and regenerative medicine.

The tool connects two single-cell biology methods that are often used separately: RNA velocity, which estimates how cells move through developmental paths, and gene regulatory network analysis, which identifies relationships among genes. By integrating both, RegVelo can simulate cell transitions over time and highlight early regulators that may be missed when scientists only examine final cell states.

RegVelo identified tfec as an early driver of pigment cell formation and revealed elf1 as a previously unknown regulator of pigment cell fate. The team then supported those predictions experimentally, showing the model can guide lab validation rather than simply describe existing data.

Scientists say RegVelo could serve as both an analysis and screening tool, reducing the need to perturb hundreds of genes individually. Beyond neural crest biology, it may help model any system where cells change over time, including cancer trajectories and future cell therapy strategies. Further studies will test whether its predictions translate across tissues and improve production of therapeutically useful cells safely in the lab.
