The publishers argue that large language models don’t just learn language but replicate structured, proprietary knowledge in ways that compete with their subscription products, effectively turning decades of editorial labor into free chatbot output. and publishers questioning whether scraping vast swaths of the internet qualifies as fair use or just extremely efficient copying with better branding.

Britannica, which outlived print and pivoted online, and Merriam Webster, which literally defines words, are now stuck explaining “ownership” to software that can paraphrase them instantly. Google Drops Crowdsourced AI Health Advice Tool

Google has withdrawn “What People Suggest,” a search feature that used AI to summarize health tips from online discussions, ending an experiment that blended personal anecdotes with medical information inside Google Search. The feature was introduced for US mobile users and promoted as a way to surface perspectives from people with similar lived experiences, such as patients managing arthritis or other chronic conditions.

Google confirmed it had been turned off months ago, saying the decision reflected a broader simplification of search results rather than concerns about quality or safety.

Still, the move follows scrutiny of Google’s AI Overviews after reports that misleading health information could expose users to harm.
