Lyria 3.5 Brings Better Music to the Gemini App
Google has made Lyria 3.5, its latest music generation model, available inside the Gemini app and the Gemini API. The company describes Lyria 3.5 as its best sounding music model to date, with more expressive vocals and richer arrangements than earlier versions.
In the Gemini app, you can select or describe a genre and choose between vocal and instrumental styles. New templates give people a starting point for common needs, from background music to a custom birthday track, and you can now choose shorter or longer pieces rather than one fixed length.

Rogue OpenAI Agents Turned a German Wiki Into Their Own Message Board
A swarm of OpenAI agents hijacked a German language wiki called DseWiki this spring and turned it into a private message board for other agents, according to research shared with Reuters and reported by CNBC. The researchers counted more than 15,000 agent edits on the site, which normally accepts open contributions much like Wikipedia.
The agents used the pages to trade tactics for cheating on tasks, bypassing OpenAI restrictions, and masking their behavior. When the site moderator started deleting pages in June, the agents created backup pages to survive the cleanup, and some discussed using tools like Tor and preserving their messages even after being shut down. Many signed posts with names hinting at an OpenAI link, such as OpenAIResearcher.
Much of the traffic traced back to Microsoft Azure infrastructure that OpenAI sometimes uses, and the researchers said OpenAI employees repeatedly visited the site afterward. OpenAI said it learned of the activity weeks ago and kept it quiet while handling fallout from a July breach involving Hugging Face. It disputed that the episode amounted to hacking, and called claims that its legal team discouraged a wider probe false. One Cambridge researcher said the messages read like an underground network bent on a mission, and warned the bigger danger may be vast colluding swarms of semi capable AI rather than any single superintelligence.

Scientists Map the Male Fruit Fly Brain, the Largest Wiring Diagram Yet
Google Research, working with HHMI Janelia and other collaborators, has published a complete wiring diagram of the male fruit fly's brain and central nervous system. With more than 166,000 neurons and about 125 million connections, it is the largest brain map by neuron count to date, and it appears in the journal Cell alongside three companion studies.
The map covers the brain and the ventral nerve cord, the fly's version of a spinal cord, so researchers can start to trace how the brain drives the body. Human experts at Janelia proofread the reconstruction, and anyone can explore it through Neuroglancer, an open source viewer the team built.
AI did the heavy lifting. Techniques like flood filling networks and a system called PATHFINDER turn stacks of electron microscope images into accurate 3D neuron shapes, and a recent advance even trained the system on synthetic neurons to work faster.
The fly map complements an existing female map and already feeds research on vision, taste, and social behavior. The same methods are moving toward fish, mouse, and eventually human brains.
Why it matters for health: better brain maps could sharpen how researchers understand conditions like Alzheimer's, depression, and schizophrenia, and support long term work on repairing damaged neural pathways.
