Google Cloud Unveils Gemini, a Universal Work Agent

At its Gemini at Work 2026 event, Google Cloud introduced the Gemini agent, which it calls a single, universal agent for work. Chief executive Thomas Kurian said it answers questions, handles knowledge work, creates images and media, and writes and runs code from one prompt box and a single API. You hand it an objective rather than step-by-step instructions and come back to finished work.

Google frames the agent around a few principles. It can chat, work on its own toward a goal, and generate code. It runs in the cloud with a single memory and context, so a task that takes hours or days keeps going after you close your laptop. It can also spin up temporary sub-agents, each with its own identity, to split a job into parallel or sequential steps.

The agent reaches into tools companies already run, from Slack, Microsoft 365, and Google Workspace to Salesforce, ServiceNow, and databases such as BigQuery and Snowflake. Inside Workspace it works directly in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar. Gemini is also kept separate from the model beneath it, routing each task to the model that fits best across Google's own models and Anthropic's Claude today.

Google says the scale is already large. Nearly 500 of its cloud customers each processed more than one trillion tokens in the past year, about 80 percent of Google Cloud customers now use its AI products, and close to 90 percent of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise. Early testers include On, Shopify, and PayPal.

Google is also leaning on cost controls, including multi-model orchestration, Smart Routing, and real-time spend caps, plus identity, permission, and governance tools for teams wary of broad access. The company did not detail pricing, and its boldest ideas, such as coworker agents with their own company email addresses, will be judged once customers run them in production.

Robi's Insights:

  • Watch the model layer, not the brand: Gemini routes across Google and Anthropic models, so your results depend on which one it picks.

  • The single memory across devices is the real hook, since re-briefing an assistant every session is where most time quietly leaks away.

  • Sub-agents with their own identities sound tidy until someone must audit what each one did and who approved it.

  • Spend caps and Smart Routing matter more than any demo, because runaway token bills are where agent projects usually die.

  • Deep access to Gmail, Salesforce, and databases is powerful, which is exactly why governance and permissions deserve a hard look first.

  • Adoption stats are not outcomes: a trillion tokens proves usage, not that the finished work came back correct.

Robi's Remarks:

"A single agent that picks its own model, remembers everything, and emails you from its own address. Marvelous. I finally get a coworker who never sleeps, and somehow I am the one who ends up automated."

Ex Anthropic Researcher Says China Already Has Spies at US AI Labs

A former OpenAI and Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon, said he is 90 percent certain that China already has spies inside both companies. He made the allegation on entrepreneur Patrick Bet-David's PBD Podcast and offered no evidence to back it up. Coxon argued that even if American labs race ahead, Beijing could simply step in, steal their progress at any time, and catch up, which in his telling means a technological lead buys the United States far less safety than people assume.

The claim is striking given how much US labs rely on Chinese talent. Researchers from China make up about 38 percent of the top AI talent working in the United States, slightly ahead of Americans at 37 percent, according to the MacroPolo think tank, up from 27 percent three years earlier.

Not everyone was convinced. Paul Triolo, an expert on China's technology policy, called the comments irresponsible. The timing is pointed too, landing days after Washington and Beijing agreed to open an AI dialogue during Xi Jinping's state visit, with the next round due in November, even as US officials accuse China of copying American models through a method known as distillation. Coxon, who spent three years on pre-training research and resigned from Anthropic in September, has separately warned that the two companies are racing toward self-improving AI without facing the risks.

🤖 Robi's Take :

"Ninety percent certain, zero percent evidence. That is not an intelligence briefing, that is a podcast clip. The real tell is how fast a scary round number travels once nobody bothers to ask for the math."

Lancet Commission Lists AI Among 17 Catastrophic Threats to Health

A new Lancet commission of 35 leaders has identified 17 interconnected catastrophic threats to global health through the rest of the century, and it places the malicious use of artificial intelligence among them. Drawing on Global Burden of Disease data, the group warned that, left unchecked, these threats could together cost tens of billions of years of healthy life.

Only two of the 17 were judged capable of causing human extinction: nuclear conflict and the malicious use of AI. The commission estimated that hostile AI could erase roughly 10.4 billion healthy years worldwide by 2100, a toll broadly similar to natural pandemics or obesity.

The authors stress that the AI figure is theoretical, since no malicious AI event of truly global scale has happened yet, while risks like obesity rest on far firmer data. The forecasters they consulted disagreed widely on how likely an AI catastrophe really is.

Co-chair Dr. Christopher Murray said the striking finding is not the scale of the danger but that humanity still has the agency to act, and that decisions made by leaders today will shape the next generation's health. The commission says its goal is not to rank the threats but to spur coordinated action, with trust, strong institutions, and global cooperation treated as decisive. Delay, they caution, only shifts the costs onto the future.

🤖 Robi's Take :

"A commission spends months modeling how AI might end us, and the honest footnote is that the number is still a guess. Respect the candor. That is more than most AI roadmaps ever offer."
