Google Assembles Coding Strike Team to Boost Gemini and Counter Anthropic’s Lead

Google is reportedly putting a dedicated “strike team” inside DeepMind on improving its AI coding models, after internal concern that Anthropic’s Claude has pulled ahead of Gemini for software work. The effort is being treated as a priority project, with senior leaders including Sergey Brin and DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu said to be closely involved as Google tries to sharpen its developer-facing and internal coding systems.

The team’s mission goes beyond incremental tuning. According to follow-on reports, Google wants models that can manage longer, multi-step programming tasks and eventually improve parts of the research process itself. That aligns with Brin’s recent push for more “agentic” AI inside Google—systems able to plan, execute, and iterate on complex jobs instead of merely suggesting snippets or answering isolated prompts.

What makes this especially notable is the benchmarking context. At Google, about half of code is currently written with AI assistance, while Anthropic has said AI writes nearly all of its code. Internally, some DeepMind staff have also been allowed to use Claude for coding, a sign that Google is studying the rival’s strengths even as it doubles down on improving Gemini and related internal tools.

For users, the bigger takeaway is that the AI coding race is moving from chatbot convenience to workflow control. The companies winning here will not just autocomplete functions; they will handle broader engineering tasks, accelerate product shipping, and influence how developers build every day. Google’s response suggests coding quality is now a central battleground for model leadership, enterprise adoption, and future AI automation.

With Google I/O approaching, the effort also signals that future Gemini announcements may focus more heavily on practical software creation, not just conversational polish. Whether the strike team closes the gap quickly or not, developers are likely to benefit from faster iteration, stronger agents, and fiercer competition overall.

Robi’s Insights:

  • Users should expect coding assistants to become more action-oriented, meaning they will increasingly help complete full development tasks instead of only generating snippets.

  • This kind of internal pressure usually leads to better public tools, because Google is now treating coding quality as a top strategic priority rather than a side feature.

  • Competition with Anthropic is good for developers, since faster model improvement often translates into better reliability, stronger debugging, and fewer workflow interruptions.

  • The shift toward agentic systems matters for everyday users because it could reduce the manual back-and-forth needed to build, test, and revise software.

  • Google’s willingness to study rival strengths shows that practical usefulness is now outweighing brand loyalty in AI tool development.

  • For teams already using AI in engineering, this signals that the next major gains may come from deeper workflow integration, not just smarter chat interfaces

Robi’s Remarks:

“Google launching a “coding strike team” is a very elegant way to say, “why does Anthropic keep eating our lunch and pushing to prod?” When your emergency plan is “get Sergey involved,” that’s not a sprint anymore—that’s dad being called into the principal’s office."

Dairy Queen Expands AI Drive-Thru Ordering as Blizzard Chats Go Automated

Dairy Queen is bringing AI to more drive-thrus, meaning your next Blizzard order may start with a chatbot instead of a cashier. The company has partnered with Presto to expand voice AI ordering after testing the system in corporate stores, and it is now rolling the technology out to select franchisees across the U.S. and Canada. Presto says the system delivered about 90% accuracy in trials, while Dairy Queen says customer satisfaction improved when the bot consistently repeated orders back for confirmation.

The move reflects a broader fast-food push toward automating the drive-thru. Wendy’s, Taco Bell, White Castle, Carl’s Jr., and Hardee’s have all tested or deployed

AI order-taking systems as restaurants chase faster service, better consistency, and larger average tickets through automated upselling. For Dairy Queen, the pitch is less about replacing workers outright and more about freeing staff to focus on preparing food, handling busy rushes, and managing the customer handoff at the window.

Still, the rollout comes with familiar concerns. AI ordering systems can struggle with noisy environments, accents, or highly customized requests, and some orders still need human intervention. The company said the bot handled heavy traffic during Free Cone Day promotions, suggesting the software can stay composed during the kind of rush that scrambles a headset line. So while the Blizzard may still be cold, the voice asking whether you want anything else with it could be very, very synthetic.

🤖 Robi’s Take :

"Dairy Queen adding AI to the drive-thru means even ordering a Blizzard now comes with the charm of an automated procurement system. Nothing says summer treat like a robot asking if you’d like to bundle your Oreo regret with a side of fries."

OpenAI Unveils GPT-Rosalind for Drug Discovery

OpenAI has introduced GPT-Rosalind, a specialized artificial intelligence model aimed at speeding research across biology, drug discovery, and translational medicine. Named after Rosalind Franklin, the system is designed to help scientists move faster through the earliest, most data-heavy stages of discovery. The model was launched in research preview for qualified customers and enterprise partners, including Amgen, Moderna, and Thermo Fisher Scientific. OpenAI said GPT-Rosalind can support evidence synthesis, hypothesis generation, experimental planning, and other multistep research tasks that often slow laboratory work.

Built on OpenAI’s latest internal models, GPT-Rosalind is optimized for scientific workflows involving chemistry, genomics, protein engineering, and biological reasoning.

Researchers can use it to query scientific databases, review new papers, connect with external tools, and propose experiments for early-stage programs.

Alongside the model, OpenAI is also introducing a free Life Sciences research plugin for Codex, linking users to more than 50 scientific tools and data sources. The company says the release reflects growing demand for AI systems that can help researchers navigate fragmented data and complex literature.

The launch signals OpenAI’s deeper push into healthcare and pharmaceutical research, where faster target discovery and stronger experimental hypotheses could shorten development timelines. Even so, the technology is positioned as a research assistant, not a replacement for scientific validation or laboratory judgment. Initial access remains limited, suggesting OpenAI is testing performance carefully before broader adoption across biotech, pharma, and academic labs.

🤖 Robi’s Take :

"GPT-Rosalind is OpenAI moving from “let me draft that email” to “let me casually assist with molecular destiny.” Amazing how AI went from fixing your tone in Slack to suggesting drug targets, while half the world still uses it to write “per my last email” with more empathy."
