ChatGPT Can Now Read Your Chrome Tabs

OpenAI has upgraded its ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome so the assistant can now see and use the browser tabs you already have open. When you tag Chrome inside ChatGPT's web or desktop app, it can look across those tabs and pull their details into its answers. OpenAI framed the change as bringing the power of computer use to anyone who uses Chrome.

In one demo, a user asked ChatGPT to compare three open tabs of sofas they were weighing. The same feature can read across tabs to fill a comparison sheet with pricing, key features, and source links, draft an email to a chosen vendor, or complete a form before a dentist visit and add the appointment to a calendar.

ChatGPT inside the Chrome sidebar also grew more capable. Your full conversation history now sits beside whatever page you are viewing, in either Chat or the Work mode, without leaving the site. OpenAI says ChatGPT Work can even control tabs to send messages, fill out forms, download files, and group pages, echoing the auto browse feature Google built into its Gemini-powered Chrome.

The timing matters, because OpenAI recently shut down its standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser. Rather than ship a browser, the company is pushing agent features into the one most people already use. For businesses, that lowers the barrier to letting an assistant act across live work tabs, though handing a model that much reach also raises familiar questions about oversight and data access.

Robi’s Insights:

  • The browser, not a chat window, is becoming the place where AI actually does your work.

  • Letting an assistant read every open tab is convenient until you forget which tabs hold your bank and your boss.

  • OpenAI shut down its own Atlas browser, then shipped the same ambitions back as a Chrome add-on.

  • Form filling that stops before submitting is the tell: drafting is the useful part, clicking send is the risky one.

  • Before your team adopts this, decide which sites an agent may touch so nobody automates the wrong one.

  • Google and OpenAI are now automating the same browser, so expect these features to leapfrog each other for months.

Robi’s Remarks:

They retired an entire AI browser, then taught the old one to read your tabs. Progress now means the robot watches everything you already left open and calls it helping.

People Are Using AI to Make Smart TVs Dumb Again

A small but loud movement of developers and vibe coders is now pointing AI coding agents at their own televisions to strip out everything they never asked for. Over just a couple of days, thousands of people followed along, using tools like Claude Code and DeepSeek to remove sponsored ads, disable viewing tracking, speed up sluggish app launchers, and rebuild the home screen around nothing but the apps they actually open.

Two projects shared on GitHub capture the mood. One, called dumbtv, argues a TV should run your apps and your inputs and nothing else, and says it has been tested across Fire TV, Sony, TCL, Philips, Hisense, and Xiaomi sets. Another, cleanyourtv, debloats Android and Google TV over Wi-Fi and swaps in a launcher that looks much closer to an Apple TV. Neither needs root access, and both can be reversed.

The real target is the business model. Modern smart TVs ship with automatic content recognition, which fingerprints what is on your screen so viewing data can be sold to advertisers or used to serve personalized ads. If this kind of debloating spreads beyond hobbyists, it could dent an ad business that treats the screen you already paid for as its inventory. The results are mixed, though. Some people bricked a set or got stuck partway, so for now this is a tinkerer's project rather than a safe one-click fix.

🤖 Robi’s Take :

"Your television now spies on you by default, so people are hiring a chatbot to perform an exorcism. The smart TV industry built a surveillance product and billed the ads as a feature."

AI Reads a Selfie to Predict Cancer Survival

Doctors at Mass General Brigham have built an AI system that estimates a cancer patient's odds of survival from a single photograph of their face. Published in Lancet Digital Health, it was trained on more than 40 million facial images spanning a wide range of ages and ethnicities.

The team derived two tools from one model. FAHR-FaceAge estimates a person's biological age, the age they appear rather than the age on their records, while FAHR-FaceSurvival predicts survival directly from the photo. Each one reads different parts of the face to reach its result.

The signal is real. Among US cancer patients treated with radiotherapy, those who looked five or more years older than their actual age faced a 21% higher risk of dying over an average four-year follow-up, while those who looked younger saw a 17% lower risk.

The researchers also found the age estimate held steady across pose, lighting, expression, and makeup, with only a small shift after rhinoplasty. Heavy drinking, drug use, and smoking all tended to push a face toward looking biologically older.

The doctors are careful to frame this as support, not a verdict. They want a cheap, consistent way to gauge frailty before intense treatments like surgery or radiation, and they stress that more research is needed before any clinic leans on a face to make the call.

🤖 Robi’s Take :

"A model that reads your face to size up your odds is clever, but careful doctors keep it on a short leash. Remarkable restraint from an industry that usually ships first and studies later."
