Google Pulls AI Health Summaries After Investigation Flags Risk of Harm
Google has removed several AI Overviews, its AI-generated summary boxes shown atop search results for certain medical queries after a Guardian investigation revealed the summaries were providing misleading and potentially dangerous health information.
The Guardian probe found that when users searched for medical terms like “what is the normal range for liver blood tests,” the AI produced simplified numeric answers without crucial context such as age, sex, ethnicity, or health status, details experts say are essential for accurate interpretation. In one alarming example, the AI’s guidance could have incorrectly reassured people with serious liver disease that their results were normal.
Health professionals and charities described some of the AI Overviews as “dangerous” and “alarming,” warning that oversimplified or
 | incorrect responses could lead patients to delay necessary care or make unsafe decisions. Similar issues were identified in other health topics, |
including dietary advice for cancer patients and breast/cervical cancer screening information. In response, Google has selectively disabled AI Overviews for certain queries tied to these risks, though the company has not publicly confirmed specific removals.
