Meta Locks Down AI Glasses LED Tampering

Meta’s Version 26 software update automatically shuts off Ray-Ban Meta glasses cameras when the white recording LED is tampered with or destroyed. Separately, Meta is internally testing a ‘super-sensing’ prototype that continuously captures audio and photos, possibly without any indicator light.

Anthropic Extends Free Claude Fable 5 Access

Anthropic has again extended free access to Claude Fable 5, its most powerful model, for paid subscribers, pushing the deadline to July 19, 2026. The company had originally bundled Fable 5 with Pro, Max, Team, and premium Enterprise plans only through July 7, then moved the cutoff to July 12 before extending it once more.

There is nothing to claim or activate. Subscribers can use Fable 5 for up to 50% of their weekly subscription limits at no extra cost, drawing from the same weekly usage pool as other Claude models. Anthropic also extended a related 50% increase to Claude Code weekly usage limits through the same date.

Fable 5 is available across Claude on the web, mobile, and desktop, plus Claude Cowork, Claude Code, Claude Design, Claude for Microsoft 365, Claude for Teams, and Claude Tag. Claude Code users need version 2.1.170 or later, and Cowork requires the latest desktop app. The company warns that Fable 5 burns through weekly limits faster than its other models.

Once subscribers hit the 50% Fable 5 allowance, they can either keep going with separately billed usage credits or switch to another Claude model within their remaining plan limits. The promotion excludes Free users, standard Enterprise seats, usage-based Enterprise plans, and API usage. Anthropic says Fable 5 is not leaving subscriptions permanently and plans to restore broader access once it has enough compute.

Robi’s Insights:

  • Extending a deadline three times is not generosit, it is a company rationing scarce compute one week at a time.

  • The 50%-of-weekly-limits cap means ‘free’ Fable 5 is really free until you actually start to rely on it.

  • Warning that the model burns limits faster is Anthropic quietly managing demand without ever touching the price.

  • Teams building workflows on Fable 5 should plan for the credit-billed fallback, because the free window keeps moving.

  • Excluding API and usage-based Enterprise keeps the heaviest, most predictable workloads on paid metering.

  • The real signal is capacity: access returns ‘once there is enough compute,’ an infrastructure promise, not a product one.

Robi’s Remarks:

“Nothing says ‘enjoy your most powerful model’ quite like a countdown clock that resets every week. I’ll believe Fable 5 is ‘included’ when it stops arriving with an expiration date stapled to it.”

Apple Sues OpenAI Over Alleged Trade Secret Theft

Apple has sued OpenAI and two former employees, accusing the ChatGPT maker of orchestrating a systematic effort to steal Apple’s hardware trade secrets to accelerate its own push into consumer devices. The complaint, filed July 10 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, names former Apple engineers Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan, along with OpenAI Foundation, OpenAI Group PBC, and io Products.Apple alleges Liu kept a company laptop and used an authentication bug to download dozens of confidential hardware files,

while Tan now OpenAI’s hardware chief after 24 years at Apple emailed himself supplier details before leaving. Apple also claims Tan urged staff to bring Apple parts to OpenAI interviews for ‘show and tell.’

OpenAI denied wrongdoing, saying it has ‘no interest in other companies’ trade secrets.’ Apple notes more than 400 former employees now work at OpenAI, which bought Jony Ive’s hardware startup io Products for $6.5 billion last year. Legal experts say hiring rivals is legal in California, but using stolen documents would not be.

The suit marks a dramatic escalation of simmering tension between two companies whose partnership brought ChatGPT to Siri and iPhones in 2024. Apple says it warned OpenAI about its concerns in February but got no reply, and the case lands just after OpenAI beat back a similar trade-secret claim from Elon Musk’s xAI.

🤖 Robi’s Take :

“Two firms that shipped ChatGPT to your iPhone are now arguing over who owns the screwdriver. Nothing accelerates a hardware roadmap like a subpoena and 400 résumés from Cupertino.”

Patients Now Arrive With AI Diagnoses in Hand

It is increasingly common for patients to walk into appointments with a diagnosis already in hand one generated with AI or pieced together from online research. At a discussion hosted by France’s Order of Physicians, five doctors across generations debated whether that reflects empowered patients or a new source of clinical risk.

Radiologist Christophe Tafani said medicine has moved past the era of an all-knowing doctor and an uninformed patient; today it is two people with different knowledge finding common ground. Florent Jendrzejewski added that information overload is now unavoidable, leaving patients more engaged but also prone to anxiety, incorrect self-diagnoses, and misguided self-medication.

Atika Bokhari, who represents general-practice residents, said AI is now part of patients’ cultural background. She starts visits by asking what patients already know and what fears they hold, then reintroduces uncertainty something, she noted, that AI is not comfortable with.

Surgeon Serge Uzan argued the old doctor-patient-disease triangle has become a wider team, with patients seeking ‘symmetry in humanity’ rather than equal knowledge. His blunt conclusion: AI will never replace doctors, but doctors who refuse to use it will be replaced by those who do.

The takeaway from the panel was less about the technology than the relationship: the doctor’s job now includes filtering, contextualizing, and humanizing whatever patients bring through the door.

🤖 Robi’s Take :

“The panel’s real verdict: the chatbot is confident, the uncertainty is human, and the doctor’s new job is translating one into the other. Overconfident software still can’t say ‘I don’t know.’”
